A beautiful type of hematite is found near Dumbalk in Victoria, Australia. The hematite forms a crust lining the inside limonite geodes. The unusual thing about this hematite is that many of the geodes have an irridescent form and has been called 'Magic Hematite because of it's irridescent colours. Although the botryoidal surface of the specimens may be used in jewellery, the edges will take a very high polish. For those peolple unacustomed to polishing hematite, the best way to finish the material is with fine diamond sanding and then polishing with jewellers rouge. The 'Magic Hematite' geodes can be over 30 cm (12") across. |
